Host destination, Tuxtla Gutiérrez

Tuxtla Gutiérrez is the capital of Chiapas, it has 3 nature reserves, as well as 18 museums and sites of interest; one of its most important tourist attractions is the Sumidero Canyon National Park, where you can take a boat tour, rappel, birdwatching, cycling and hiking.

The city is part of the “Selva Zoque” region so it has the influence of this millenary Zoque culture, older even than the Mayans, which still preserves clothing, traditions, festivals and gastronomy.

We invite you to visit the typical family “botaneros” (a place to eat singular snacks especially to be eaten with beer), with delicious meals from the region, as well as the traditional Zoque kitchens, most of them located in the Copoya township.

Tuxtla Gutiérrez has the largest tourist infrastructure in the entire state, so you can discover impressive waterfalls and caves, and live great adventures, and at night rest in comfortable hotels.

The city is surrounded by 4 natural reserves, so that a few kilometers from it, you can find find imposing Jungles, Waterfalls, Caves and Canyons, such as the Aguacero Waterfall, the Chorreadero Waterfall, the Río la Venta Canyon, the Arco del Tiempo, Sima del Cielo, among others, where you can perform various adventure activities such as: rappelling, hiking, canyoneering, bird watching, rafting, paragliding, flights in ultralight and light aircraft, as well as mountain biking.

Just 15 minutes from Tuxtla Gutiérrez, it is located the first colonial city founded by the Spanish in Chiapas, Chiapa de Corzo, with great tradition and culture, where the traditional “Fiesta Grande de los Parachicos” takes place year after year, cataloged as Intangible Heritage of The humanity.

From Tuxtla Gutiérrez it is possible to take tours to the most popular tourist attractions in the Chiapas, such as the El Chiflón Waterfalls, the Montebello lakes, and San Cristóbal.

The Miguel Álvarez del Toro Zoo, located in the “El Zapotal” nature reserve, was named after the famous researcher and defender of the natural resources of Chiapas. The most fascinating thing about this zoo are its inhabitants; The endemic species of the state, we can find them in their natural environment and this aspect makes this zoo a unique place that can be enjoyed in a wonderful journey of more than 2 hours through its corridors.

A walk to the west of Chiapas, to have visions of the colonial and agricultural past of the region where native  Zoque language speakers still survive, descendants of the legendary Olmecs. The adventure adds to the  experience when we take our boat and tour the dam for an hour before arriving and getting to know one of the  most enigmatic colonial temples in Chiapas, built by the Dominican order in the 17th century with a baroque  style and as a result of the elevation of the waters of the Grijalva or Mezcalapa river, it is now in the middle of  the great artificial lake.

After the visit that includes that we can visit and swim in this dam, we return to the property to enjoy a  gastronomic experience made with vegetables from the region that will accompany a Tilapia or Tenguayaca  mojarra that are grown in the reservoir. Our Experience continues with a walk through the cocoa plantation  that supplies seeds to the famous Kakaw Museum in San Cristóbal, since with the seeds grown here they make  chocolates that participate in world chocolate events. At the end of a sensory workshop to discover the magic  of cocoa, we will generate experiences that will integrate all our senses.

Among the variety of artisan studios that open their doors to tourism with the experience of lacquer from Chiapa de Corzo, we find Artesanías Los Gemelos, a family- run workshop that has years of experience brushing and lacquering. In this activity, it is possible to know the whole process of this technique, from the selection of the appropriate wood, through hand carving and finally choosing the perfect colors to obtain an authentic Chiapas result. The entire process is based on the history of Chiapa de Corzo, from the emergence and evolution of lacquer, and the recognition of the head of the Suárez Coutiño family, an unmissable artistic experience.

Enjoy a unique and different adventure in one of the Mayan Tsotsiles communities. The departure will be at 8:30 am towards the Mayan community of Pilalchen “Place of stones and caves”, there we will prepare the backpacks to start the excursion, during the tour we will learn about medicinal plants and sacred spaces such as caves and springs. The adventure takes place in Tuxtla Chico, the first stop on the tour is the Archaeological site of Izapa. Afterwards, we will head downtown of Tuxtla Chico to visit the María Candelaria church, built in 1808 as well as observe its 18th century altarpiece. The tour ends at the Laparra family’s artisan chocolate workshop, 3 generations of women making artisan chocolate with the original recipe.
