Expediciones Sierra Norte

We strive every day to create memorable travel experiences for you, while keeping in mind that the preservation of our culture and natural resources is the main impulse for this project.

The ecotourism project was conceived in 1994 as an opportunity for regional development. It started in two communal properties: Pueblos Mancomunados and Ixtlán de Juárez and has since then, been adopted by several other community organizations of the Sierra Norte. We are very thankful of the support of our community members and local government, as well as the Canadian Embassy and the Commission for Environmental Cooperation.

The project spread to the rest of communities by 1998. That same year, a network of over 100 kilometers (60 miles) of trails was designed to connect all of Pueblos Mancomunados. At the same time, Expediciones Sierra Norte (our tourism operating company) was founded and a promotion and sales office was opened in the city of Oaxaca. Since then, we have been improving our services and creating unique travel experiences with each visitor, always keeping in mind that the preservation of our culture and natural resources inspires the project.
Our mission is to become “an inter-community initiative that promotes preservation of the natural and cultural heritage of local communities through the promotion of responsible, high quality tourism linked to the natural environment, traditions and customs of the communities.”

Our 4 core objectives:
1. Increase the capacity of community members to protect and sustainably manage their cultural heritage.
2. Develop an atmosphere of responsible tourism within the Pueblos Mancomunados area, which allows visitors to come in contact with nature and indigenous culture in a fun, safe and educational way.
